Small Mammals and Exotics

Caring for Creatures Great and Small

Exotic Pet Care

We treat our pocket pets and reptiles just like the important family members they are! Our in-house laboratory is appropriately calibrated to run small mammal and reptile blood samples. Our veterinary technicians are comfortable with the specialized restraint techniques that exotic pets require.

Husbandry

Husbandry is the single most important aspect of caring for exotic pets. We will review your pet’s home care and can provide you with detailed care sheets to ensure that your pet’s home environment is the best it can be. Please bring a list of all food items, as well as supplements, cage type and size, flooring material/substrate, environmental enrichment, and in the case of reptiles, light/heat sources, and temperature gradients within your enclosure. If you are able, please bring a fresh stool sample as well.

Bringing Your Exotic Pet To The Clinic

Most exotic pets aren’t used to being transported, and many reptiles require very specific temperature ranges. Please bear in mind the unique requirements of your pet when bringing them into the clinic. Also, please let us know as soon as you arrive. This will allow us to get both you and your pet into one of our exam rooms, as this will help to limit additional stress for your pet.

Wellness Care

Like cats and dogs, small mammals and other pocket pets benefit from regular wellness checkups. Many small mammals and reptiles often don’t show clinical signs of illness until much later in the disease process.

Surgery

We perform routine surgeries, such as spays, neuters, mass removals, and dental care on most small mammals. Our team is also trained in emergency surgery, such as wound repair and bladder stone/gastric foreign body removal.

Reptiles

We are excited to welcome reptiles to our practice for both wellness care as well as sick visits. Please be sure to take into account the outside temperature when bringing your reptile. Winters get awfully cold in New England!
